SCEC’S LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA PROJECT WINS TOP STATE AWARD
SCEC is proud to announce that the Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Streetscape Improvements program was selected for the top award this year by the Florida Redevelopment Association (FRA).
The FRA’s President’s Award recognizes the Town and SCEC project team’s success in completing streetscape beautification, drainage, infrastructure, and pedestrian improvements along the Town’s main corridor, Commercial Boulevard, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway Bridge.
FRA (www.redevelopment.net), founded in 1974, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to assisting Florida professionals and volunteers in community revitalization efforts. The FRA Roy F. Kenzie Awards honor the best projects and programs in Florida redevelopment. The President’s Award is given for the “Best of the Best,” to honor the best project overall across all 14 categories.
Wrote FRA President Jeremy Earle in the Florida Redevelopment Awards 2014 Best Book: “This streetscape project is a stark contrast to what was there before. Its impact on the local community and economy is profound. Pedestrian traffic has increased upward of 60 percent, businesses are reporting significant increases in sales, property values are increasing, and the hospitality industry is seeing increased private sector interest and investment.”
SCEC completed the Commercial Boulevard Streetscape Improvements work under two Construction Management at Risk contracts (East and West segments) with the Town of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. The oceanfront easternmost block features a new series of three public plazas. The western two blocks feature four shopping/business plazas with new sidewalk promenades, redesigned parking, new landscape and coral reef-inspired metal sculptures. Construction was completed in December 2013.
With its mission of “transforming spaces, revitalizing places,” FRA is committed to providing a forum for its more than 300 members to share knowledge and common experiences regarding revitalization opportunities and issues throughout Florida.
SCEC attended the official awards ceremony on October 9 during the FRA annual conference held at the Hilton Miami Downtown. SCEC was also an exhibitor at the conference.
